Female Tattoo Artists

There is a reason tattoo artist are called artists. The same way that van Gogh had a very different style from Michelangelo or Botticelli, the best tattoo artists develop a unique signature and style. Every artist you work with is going to bring something different to the table, but working with a woman may provide the best results of all. Here are 4 reasons you want your next tattoo artist to be female.

1. Female artists have a unique perspective

Art is always influenced by the perspective of the artist. When you get a tattoo, generally you want something that is unique and unusual. While you may be drawn to the style of a certain artist, that doesn’t mean you want the same tattoo they’ve created for the last 5 people they inked. Because men and women have very different life experiences, this affects their outlook and perspective, which in turn informs their artistic choices. Because there are far fewer female tattoo artists than male artists, whatever their style, it will most often stand out from the crowd.

2. Female artists are inherently more collaborative

When it comes to getting a tattoo, there is no right or wrong, but if you want to have the most input into the design of your tattoo, you may want to try working with a female artist. Many successful male tattoo artists take the stance that you are paying them for their expertise. Therefore, they seek to gain a general understanding of what you are looking for and then they take it from there. In some cases, they don’t even give you that. Sometimes, they just design the tattoo for you and you get what you get. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this and some people actually prefer that, if you actually want to work with an artist to design your next tattoo, you might want to work with a female.

3. Better tattooing experience

Getting a tattoo can be an hours, days or even months-long process. You are going to end up spending a lot of time with your tattoo artist undergoing what is, for most, a very painful process. Hairdressers and stylists (who are predominantly women) have long been viewed as essentially informal therapists. While there are certainly no 100% hard and fast rules about women, the truth is, on the whole women are more emphatic. There is a reason that men tend to seek out women rather than their buddies when they are going through something difficult or are experiencing some kind of emotional pain or trauma. If you are going to spend many, many hours up close and personal with someone, you might want that person to be a woman.

4. “Women’s intuition” may actually have a positive effect on your ink

While we all know this is not actually the case, women are often thought of as being more gentle, delicate, sensitive or fragile. The truth is, however, there are reasons why this seems to be the case and it’s not 100% inaccurate. Women are in fact often more “sensitive” than men, meaning their senses are keener. This makes them more in touch, in tune and aware of what is going on around them. While this may not seem to have a lot to do with tattoos, it actually does. Great art is about contrasts, lights and darks and subtle shading. Skin is actually comprised of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. In order for ink to set properly, it needs to reach the dermis, but if it penetrates too deep, it can reach the subcutaneous tissue. This can cause unnecessary pain and significantly increase the risk of infection. A woman’s “sensitivity” may actually give female tattoo artists the ability to penetrate the dermis at different depths to create far greater shading and variety without penetrating down to the subcutaneous tissue.
